The Ultimate Salad

With its warm goat cheese pastry wrapped in a wonderfully flaky filo dough and caramelized apples on top, it’s more like a dessert than it is a salad I suppose, but with such fresh greens and tomatoes, it somehow manages to pull itself back out of the pigeon hole and land firmly in the middle of magnifique!

L&W Oyster Co. – New York, NY

As I may have stated before, I’m not a huge fan of fried oysters. I much prefer them in the raw or roasted state. In fact, there’s only one other place that has ever made we swoon over the fried variety, Pearl Oyster Bar. But hats off to L&W, because this salad is so good- so beefed up with unsalad-like ingredients that you might even question if it’s a salad. But then again, why spoil the mood?

Three Square – Venice, CA

By now I’m guessing you’re starting to see a theme here as not one of these salads are a usual suspect, but that’s not to say that I don’t appreciate a good, all vegetable salad. I do. But when you compare that to the likes of a perfectly cooked, medium rare rib-eye, sliced over mesclun, with crumbled goat cheese, grapes and roasted pine nuts- there’s no contest!

Behind this charming little purple awning lies a tour de force of healthy, fresh salad making like the world has never seen. I mean we’re talking salads as good as desserts here people! I know I sound like a mad man, but Cocoon is the crazy one. Crazy good that is. Per the picture above, they have this one salad made with goat cheese wrapped in a pastry, served warm over a bed of caramelized apples all resting on garden fresh greens and tomatoes so flavorful it’s enough to make an American (like me) weep their GMO’s off!

And the best part is that it’s quite reasonable as meals go in Cannes. Plus the service is very friendly and accommodating (meaning they speak English), which is nice for those of us who were lazy and never learned a second language.

When I saw where it was located I have to admit that my skepticism grew exponentially. In a housing complex is usually never a good sign. But when we opened the door, I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the décor. Contemporary lines. Earthy materials such as wood and brick. It’s very well done.

As for the food, the menu as a bit all things to all people with the intent of being farm-to-table. And while this would normally be a red flag for me, I kept my hopes up, because it is the sister restaurant of Crabtree, which I like very much. That said, it’s no Crabtree. And they wasted no time establishing that as the first major miss came with the first course.

The roasted oysters are a culinary crime against mollusk-kind. And at 18 bucks a crime against your wallet as well. Served tepid and tasteless.

Fortunately the other starter made up some ground. The seared foie gras with blackberries and caramelized apples was a solid good. Granted I’m not sure if I’ve ever met a foie gras I didn’t like, so please take that with a grain of salt.

As for “solid good” that was pretty much the theme from there on. The swordfish entrée and the spicy lobster linguini as well as the lemon tart were all just that- good. Nothing rose to excellent or sank to ridicule.

Not a must-try place. But if you’re in the area and aren’t sure what you want, chances are they’ve got you covered for a nice meal. Also, if you have kids, it’s a nice spot for an early dinner. Sort of like Village Social in Mount Kisco.
