The name of this place had me feeling all nostalgic as I entered, because way back in the late 70’s/early 80’s the very first Thai restaurant I ever tried was a place called The King and I in Boston and I remember loving the pad thai out it! That said, this place has no relation to the one in Boston. And I mean NO relation. From service to décor to food, this place is like the Danny Devito to Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie Twins.

Starting at the biggest pain point, the service is horribly slow. As is the kitchen. And even the dishwashers apparently, either that or they are oddly stingy with their silverware, causing us to not only ask multiple times for serving spoons and knives, but even having to debate the necessity of the utensils with our server.

But as you know, I can forgive a lot if the food is great. Unfortunately I was given very few reasons to make amends. Both the Summer and Spring rolls were decent, but that’s somewhat to be expected. I’m not sure I ever recall having bad ones.

And as for the main dishes, the pad Thai was oily (pictured), the panang scallops were over-cooked, the green curry with chicken was okay and the chicken with broccoli was rather bland.

Sigh. I miss Boston.

I hadn’t been to this place in a while, but I used to go a lot back in the day and I really loved it for its inventive blend of Latin meets Japanese. I know, isn’t the whole fusion thing already over? And it is, but this place was born back in the heart of the fusion-explosion, when fusion dishes weren’t on every menu from Boston to Bangkok. In those days (Christ, I sound like my grandfather talking about the days when you could buy a cart full of groceries for under five bucks) you had to go to a fusion restaurant if you wanted to experience a unique blend of cultural tastes.

And unique it was, with things like foie gras atop pieces of tuna sushi, garnished with flakes of gold (pictured), live mini crabs that crawled across your plate, until you ate them, of course. And ceviches that knocked your taste buds on their collective asses. But that was then. Unfortunately, the last time I went, things had slid a little, especially in comparative context when you take into account that fusion is now a given and the game has been raised everywhere else. But that was a bit ago, so perhaps they got their groove back. If they did, it’s well worth the visit. Hell, if they did, someone please tell me ASAP, because I would head back in an instant. After all, once upon a time they were the ones who gave a much needed shot in the arm to the sushi norm.

I find it fitting somehow that this Grimaldi’s is located in a church, because in New York, pizza is basically a religion. Granted the Limelight is better known as club than a church, but regardless, this is the best thing to happen to the Limelight since ecstasy.

Some advice, however, resist the temptation to try and get too creative or tricky with the pie. This is a place for the purists. Go plain or pepperoni and mushroom. One or two toppings max. Otherwise you cover up what makes these pies stand out above the rest. If you want more inventive pies you’re in the wrong place.

Also, a little known secret- even their cannoli’s are pretty insane. Haven’t had one better since Mike’s in Boston, and that’s saying a lot.
